Boiling water reactor uses the following as moderator, coolant and working fluid

  • A boiling water reactor (BWR) is a type of light water nuclear reactor used for the generation of electrical power.
  • The BWR uses ordinary water (light water) as both its coolant and its moderator. Its unique feature is that steam is generated directly inside the reactor core.
  • Light water is much more abundant than heavy water, as it makes up 99.99% of natural water.
  • The use of light water as a coolant is beneficial as it can cool down the fuel at the same time as it heats up to steam.
