The coolant used in boiling water reactor is

  • A boiling water reactor (BWR) is a type of light water nuclear reactor used for the generation of electrical power.
  • The BWR uses ordinary water or light water (mixture of water and steam) as both its coolant and its moderator. Its unique feature is that steam is generated directly inside the reactor core.
  • Light water is much more abundant than heavy water, as it makes up 99.99% of natural water.
  • The use of light water as a coolant is beneficial as it can cool down the fuel at the same time as it heats up to steam.
