  • A reverse power relay is a protective device that is used to detect when the power is flowing from the generator to the prime mover instead of from the prime mover to the generator.
  • This can happen when the prime mover fails or when there is a sudden reduction in the load on the generator, causing the generator's output to exceed the mechanical power being supplied to it by the prime mover.
  • When the reverse power relay detects this condition, it trips a circuit breaker to disconnect the generator from the power system to prevent the generator from continuing to operate as a motor and causing damage to the prime mover.
  • The relay can also initiate other protective actions, such as shutting down the fuel supply to the prime mover or activating an alarm to alert the operator.
