For infinite parallel planes with emissivities ε1 and ε2, the interchange factor for radiation from surface 1 to surface 2 is given by

Radiation heat exchange (q) between two infinitely long parallel plates is given by:

\(q = \dfrac{{\sigma \left( {T_1^4\: - \:T_2^4} \right)}}{{\dfrac{1}{{{\varepsilon _1}}}\: + \:\dfrac{1}{{{\varepsilon _2}}}\: - \:1}}\)

The interchange view factor is 1/R

where R is the thermal resistance

R = 1

\({\rm{R}} = \dfrac{1}{{{\varepsilon _1}}} + \dfrac{1}{{{\varepsilon _2}}} - 1\)

where

ε1  = Emissivity of first plate

ε2 = Emissivity of the second plate

∴ Interchange view factor =  ε1ε2/(ε1+ ε2 − ε1ε2)
