  • When the power factor of an alternator is unity then the armature flux will be Cross-magnetization.
  • At unity power factor load, there is no reactive power component, which means that the current flowing through the stator windings is purely resistive.
  • This produces a cross-magnetizing armature reaction that distorts the main magnetic field, causing a shift in the position of the magnetic poles and reducing the effective flux density.
  • This results in a decrease in the output voltage and a reduction in the power factor.
  • The demagnetizing component of the armature reaction is in the direction opposite to the main magnetic field and reduces the strength of the main field.
  • The cross-magnetizing component of the armature reaction is in a direction perpendicular to the main magnetic field and produces a flux that is not directly useful for generating power.
