The total unit weight of the glacial outwash soil is 5 kN/m3. The water content in the soil is 17%. Find dry unit weight.
Dry unit weight or Dry weight density of a soil mass is defined as the weight of solids or solid particles of the soil mass per unit of total volume of the soil mass. It is denoted by symbol ϒd. Thus
ϒd = ϒ/(1 + w)
ϒ = weight of solid particles of the soil mass = 5 kN/m3
w = total volume of the soil mass = 17% = 0.17
ϒd = 5/(1 + 0.17)
ϒd = 4.27 kN/m3
