The nominal volume generated by the working piston when traveling from one dead center to the next is called Swept volume.

Swept volume is the volume swept by the engine piston during one stroke. It is the volume generated by the piston when traveling from one dead end to the other.

d = Inner diameter of the cylinder

L = stroke length

BDC: The extreme downward position of the piston in a vertical engine.

TDC: The extreme upward position of the piston in a vertical engine.
